Hello Amigos!
It has been awhile since my last newsletter and a lot has happened in these past few months.
We moved to Lisbon and luckily, I was able to find a studio space in a trendy old factory - the LXFactory. It consists of shops, bookstores, restaurants, and studios.
I left Austin in July but went back to do the Austin Studio Tour in November. It was a great experience and I was happy to see old friends, fellow artists, and the supporters that have been fundamental to my practice.
My plan is to keep the Austin connection alive and visit to do art shows and projects. Here in Lisbon, my plan is to expand my art and try new and different techniques. Stay tuned for new pieces coming soon.

Happy Holidays and I hope to see you soon!
As they say here Até Breve! (see you soon)
Naxieli Gomez has been very kind by keeping some of my artwork in her studio. If you are interested in some of my pieces, please visit Naxieli's studio during the Open Canopy events and keep supporting your local artists!

Ciudades Imaginarias in Lisbon
The Art of Fernando Muñoz

OPENING RECEPTION
Thursday, December 9, 2021 • 7PM
at Empanaderia: Calçada de Tapada 55. Alcantara, Lisbon

----

“Imaginary Cities” is a voyage through the art and imagination of Fernando Muñoz, experimenting with different mediums such as acrylics, watercolors, printmaking, and drawings. Imaginary Cities takes you on an exploration of Fernando’s most recurrent themes like solitude, melancholy, and the search for belonging.

“Imaginary Cities” is inspired by a poem by the Chilean poet, Nicanor Parra, “El hombre imaginario / The Imaginary Man.”

The Imaginary Man by Nicanor Parra
The imaginary man
lives in an imaginary mansion
surrounded by imaginary trees
on the banks of an imaginary river
On the imaginary walls
imaginary old paintings hang
imaginary irreparable cracks
that represent imaginary events
occurring in imaginary worlds
in imaginary times and places [...]

My First Mural!
I am super excited about this project! I was invited by my friend, João Tito Basto, to create a mural at his cultural project: Centro Periferico. On the day of the inauguration, I painted live while people were celebrating the opening of the center. It was a great experience as it was my first mural and first time painting live. Here is a sneak peek of how the mural is going and be on the lookout for an update with the final design.

Pandemic & Resistance

I had the privilege of curating this exhibition for La Peña Gallery. We invited artists to share their work, and also their experience through a series of video interviews conducted by Sandra Pomeleo-Fowler.

Not only has a global pandemic hit our lives, but there has also been an awakening after the killing of George Floyd and other members of the Black and Latinx communities. People have started to protest police brutality, demand restorations and fight for equity and the end of systemic racism in the United States.

In light of these events, we are always curious about how artists keep creating, how the current events have affected their practice, and what message and dreams they have for the future.

This exhibition is divided into 3 parts: one is the online exhibition here at La Peña’s website; the second part is an in-person exhibition at La Peña Gallery on Congress Avenue (you can visit by appointment); and the third part is a series of video interviews that will be published for the duration of the exhibit.
We hope this exhibition is the foundation of an online registry of local established and emerging artists.

I would like to express my gratitude to La Peña for their efforts on keeping the community together and always fighting for the social issues. A big thanks Sandra Pomeleo-Fowler for conducting a series of wonderful interviews with the artists, we will be sharing those soon.

Un poco de locura

I was playing with photoshop after doing this little drawing and ended up creating a gif. If you are sensitive to colors and vibrancy do not look.
The drawing is based on a dream: A cat lady figure and a green man, descending from a city-like-temple. After a storm, there are things floating in the air like little florets of a dandelion.

    My Story

I was born in Chile at the end of the 70's, so I went through the 80's listening to rock, watching movies, reading books and doodling all the time.
I studied advertising and moved to the United States in 2001. I lived in Oregon and Austin, Texas with my beautiful family for almost 20 years, then we decided to move to Lisbon. Portugal where we reside now.
My studio is located at the LX Factory in Lisbon.
    Poison of choice: Coffee.
